User Profiles

As mentioned in a previous tip, the location for user profiles in Windows 2000 is "c:Documents and Settings" by default. Underneath this folder, each user will have a sub-folder which contains desktop items, Start Menu items, temp folders, etc. In at least one case, I have had too many users with profiles too large to keep on the C drive. You can change the location of these profile directories in the following location in the Registry

Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Key: SoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProfileList Name: ProfilesDirectory Data Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ Value: path

Please be sure to back up your Registry and your current Profiles before making changes. Also note that this will only take effect for users logging in after the change to the Registry. You may also have to copy the Default User profile to the new location.
