No one in their right minds uses the command line tool unless they have to now that gparted is available, but if you find outself outside, barking at your linux box like a dog, this is how you do it.

  • parted /dev/sdb
    • mklabel msdoc
    • print
(observe the start and end blocks from the above command)
    • mkpart primary start end

Then you must create the file system (most parteds don't know ext3 yet)

  • mkfs -t ext3 /dev/sdb1

whew! What? you need to add that new disk to the file system table?

vi /etc/fstab and add:

/dev/sdb1 /opt ext3 defaults 1 2
