VM Time Sync

Guest Time Sync Issues

The first thing to do is install the vmware tools. After than you can enable time syn in the tools, or edit the vmx associated with the VM to

tools.syncTime = "TRUE"

Now some systems will still run too fast or too slow, specifically linux 2.6 systems. They contain an algorithm to correct for lost clock tics which is a problem when they are descheduled constantly in VM.

Note: SLES Claims "The overcorrection for lost ticks has been fixed in Linux kernel 2.6.18. Upgrading to 2.6.18 or later also solves this problem".

The first step should be to disable this algorithm. Do this by adding the clock=pit boot option as detailed in Doc ID 1420 (Too Fast) below.

Another option is to add the expirimental VMDesched by running the command below and when prompted to install the VMware Descheduled Time Accounting daemon, choose yes. This is untested.

vmware-config-tools.pl --experimental
